In 2016, I entered the Moscow National Research University Higher School of Economics on a budget without entrance exams.
Victoria Voronina
received the budget for the list Olympiad
I received the right to preferential admission without competition because I won a list Olympiad from the list of the Ministry of Education and Science. In this article I will tell you what school Olympiads are like, what benefits they provide and how to prepare for them.
There are different ways to enroll in a university for a bachelor's or specialty degree.
According to the results of the Unified State Exam. Each specialty has its own list of exams. Usually this is 3 or 4 items. One of them is established by the Ministry of Education and Science, the rest are at the discretion of the university.
Some universities have the right to conduct additional tests. The list of such universities is determined every year by the government on the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Science and Rosobrnadzor. Every year the list of universities changes, but most often the list includes top institutions: Moscow State University, MGIMO, St. Petersburg State University, MIPT.
Based on the results of the Unified State Exam and creative test. The university may schedule an additional professional or creative test or interview.
Based on the results of internal exams. Instead of the Unified State Exam, you can only take university exams. This right is available to people with disabilities, foreign citizens, holders of secondary vocational or higher education diplomas and school graduates before 2009.

The winners and prize-winners of the final stage receive the right to enter the budget for a specialty in the Olympiad profile for 4 years. That is, if I wanted to enter the Faculty of Economics, I needed to win the All-Russian Competition in Economics.
At the first stages of Vseros, a good knowledge of the school subject is sufficient. From the regional stage the tasks become more complicated. Schoolchildren already require a thorough knowledge of the material, broad erudition and creative thinking.
List Olympiads. Another type of Olympiads is list competitions. These are Olympiads from the list that is established every year by the Ministry of Education and Science. List Olympiads consist of two stages: correspondence and full-time. They are often organized by universities. For example, “Conquer the Sparrow Hills!” and “Lomonosov” - MSU Olympiads, “Highest Test” - HSE Olympiads.
Each university makes the decision to admit graduates based on the results of the Olympiads from the list independently: for the same result, one university can accept without entrance exams, while another can give 100 points for the subject.
The winners of the Olympiad also have a gradation: they receive a diploma of 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree. These are like 1st, 2nd and 3rd places: 1st degree - winners of the Olympiad, 2nd and 3rd - prize-winners. The higher the level of the Olympiad and diploma, the more benefits. Depending on the university, the list Olympiad can provide:
- admission without entrance examinations;
- 100 points for the Unified State Exam in the subject of the Olympiad;
- maximum score for the additional entrance test.
Unlike Vseros, the results of these Olympiads must be confirmed by Unified State Exam scores. Usually you need to get at least 75 points on the exam, but there are exceptions. Also, universities often award benefits for the results of Olympiads only in grades 10-11, that is, an Olympiad diploma for the 9th grade will not help with admission.
Educational institutions can change the rules for considering the results of listed Olympiads every year. It is better to always check the university websites for current information.
In computer science at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in 2019, for different programs you need to score at least 75, 80 or 85 points to confirm benefits for the Olympiad
My story with the Olympics. I have participated in olympiads since elementary school. At first I just passed for show, because I was a good student and didn’t want to let my class teacher down.
In high school, university competitions oriented me to the world of professions: at first I wanted to be a diplomat, because they travel a lot. I solved problems in international relations and geography, but I realized that this was not my thing. Then I wanted to become a journalist: I went to competitions in journalism and literature, but no one appreciated my creative abilities there.
By high school, I realized that I liked history and foreign languages. I focused on these subjects and participated in all competitions in them in the 11th grade.
At school we were awarded for participating in olympiads. They gathered in the assembly hall and presented congratulations on beautiful pieces of paper
I wanted to study at a prestigious university in a non-technical specialty. My parents wanted me to study in Moscow or abroad. They were willing to take out a loan for my education, but I would have been embarrassed: higher education is my desire, not their financial obligation.
Looking ahead, my average score for the Unified State Exam excluding Olympiads was 82.5. To be admitted to my program, I would not have had 14 points: in total I had 330 points, and the passing grade started at 344.
Data on the average Unified State Exam score for one exam among applicants to universities in 2016
Speciality. In 11th grade, I didn’t know exactly what I would enroll in. I liked history, social studies, and foreign languages.
With this set, you can apply for history, religious studies, political science, international relations, sociology, law, linguistics, philosophy, cultural studies - and that’s not all.
Information on other subjects and areas of training is in the order of the Ministry of Education and Science dated September 4, 2014 No. 1204.
I studied the training courses of each educational program on the official website. I liked political science and sociology the most. For sociology, I had to take specialized mathematics at the final exams, but registration for taking it ended in December, so I would not be able to submit documents.
In high school, I studied Arabic and was interested in studying the perception of women wearing hijab. Therefore, for my research work I chose the topic “Social ideas about women in hijab: dependence on the degree of acquaintance and communication (using the example of students of the Higher School of Economics Lyceum)”
For intellectual and sporting achievements, you can receive a special right upon admission - admission without entrance tests. I didn’t plan to participate in the Olympic Games, European or World Championships, so I decided to try my hand at educational competitions.
My preparation consisted of two parts: brushing up on basic school knowledge and training in Olympiad tasks.
In foreign language and social studies, my results were unimportant: I did not pass either the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad or the intramural stage of university Olympiads. Therefore, in the second half of 11th grade, I concentrated more on history olympiads.
I qualified for the region and was invited to the finals of the Lomonosov Olympiad in history and political science, the “Highest Standard” Olympiad in history and Oriental studies, and the Moscow Olympiad for schoolchildren in history.
I spent varying amounts of time preparing, but I tried to sit down with history for at least an hour every day. A week before the regional stage, instead of school, I spent six days in the library. The teachers cursed, but still met halfway: I passed the minimum knowledge test, and then returned to preparing for the Olympiads and the Unified State Exam.
Here are some recommendations I can give for preparing for the History Olympiad.
Study maps of battles, annexations of territories, changes in internal borders of regions. Starting from the municipal stage, Vseros has tasks on historical geography. This skill will also be useful on the Unified State Exam.
Folder with maps from the 9th to the 13th centuries
Look at and memorize portraits of historical figures. This is a common task in Olympiads - it’s a shame to lose points for it. I had a flash drive where I created folders by century, where I saved all the portraits of figures I met while studying the historical period. Then I turned on the slide show mode and played through the images until I remembered everything.
Study culture. Typically, assignments involving paintings, architecture, literature, or films receive the least points. It's difficult to remember. I memorized “mechanically”: I drew important monuments by hand, read the contents of works and watched films.
This is the sketch I made on the topic of Russian culture of the 12th-17th centuries

Olympiads for schoolchildren that provide benefits when entering a university
Admission to a university is closely related to the results of the Unified State Exam, preparation for which takes a lot of time and effort from schoolchildren. For some children, taking the Unified State Exam causes fear.
A good opportunity to get an advantage over your peers in the form of various benefits is to take part in a subject Olympiad and take one of the prizes. The benefit may be an increase in additional points or admission to the ranks of students without entrance exams.
In the second case, it is enough to provide the university with a secondary vocational education diploma or school certificate. What Olympiads provide such benefits and what are their rules? Below you can find out more about this.
To get an advantage in admission, you need to become a winner or prize-winner of the final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren and the Olympiad from the list of the Ministry of Education and Science. In addition to them, many other equally interesting competitions are held in Russia, but they do not provide tangible benefits - some institutions can add from 1 to 10 additional points to the overall result.
All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren
This is a system of annual subject Olympiads organized for students of educational organizations that implement general education programs. Consists of school, municipal, regional and final stages. It is the most important competition for students of Russian schools who plan to enter the country's leading universities.
Winners and prize-winners of the final stage receive the right to be admitted to any university in their field of study without exams. If the holder of a final diploma of the All-Russian Olympiad chooses a program that does not correspond to his field of study, then, by decision of the university, he may be given 100 points instead of the Unified State Exam results in the relevant subject.
The benefit is valid only for 4 years. During this time, you need to decide on a university, clarify all the nuances and submit the necessary package of documents. You will not need to provide USE results.
Olympiads from the list of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation
Every year, the Ministry of Education and Science approves and publishes a list of Olympiads for schoolchildren and their levels. For the 2019/29 academic year, the list included 80 competitions, last years there were 76. Winning them or taking a prize place gives a benefit when entering domestic universities in the current academic year.
All Olympiads from the list of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation are divided into three levels, taking into account quantitative and qualitative criteria: the highest is the first, the lowest is the second. One or another level is assigned separately to each subject of the Olympiad.
For example, the “Highest Standard”, organized by the Higher School of Economics, is represented by all three levels.
Important points and nuances
Each university can approve its own, shortened list of Olympiads that provide benefits, and determine the type of benefits for winners and runners-up depending on the level of the competition. The benefit can usually be used for 4 years.
However, many universities only accept diplomas received during the graduating class. Therefore, read the requirements from the admission rules, which are published on the official website of the selected educational institution.
Universities publish all information about benefits before October 1 of the year preceding the admission of applicants.
Winners and prize-winners of Olympiads can take advantage of the benefit provided they confirm their Olympic result on the Unified State Exam. To do this, you must score at least 75 points in a core subject. But a university can set a higher bar if it wishes.
A diploma from one Olympiad allows you to get a discount when entering a number of universities at once. In accordance with the general admission rules, an applicant has the right to submit a package of documents to 5 universities. But if the benefit does not imply obtaining the maximum result on the Unified State Examination, but admission without exams, then you can use it only at one university and in one direction.
You can obtain more accurate information on benefits for winners of certain Olympiads by contacting the admissions office of the university you are interested in.
If you have a strong interest in a subject, then there is a great incentive to study it with renewed vigor in order to take part in the Olympiad on it and win one of the prizes. This way, you can get a “quota” for a budget place at one of the country’s prestigious universities even before you graduate from school.

Benefits for winners of the 2019 Olympiads
Winning various intellectual competitions and competitions, first of all, gives high school students the opportunity to enter a university without USE results. Winners and prize-winners of Olympiads are enrolled in universities ahead of schedule, before the start of the two main stages of enrollment in the general competition.
It is not surprising that thousands of Russian high school students annually try their hand at and participate in intellectual competitions in the hope of proving themselves and receiving a diploma, and with it a coveted place in the first year of their chosen educational institution.
In recent years, the Olympiad movement has been gaining momentum: each leading Russian university holds its own Olympiad, and schools hold special Olympiad electives and schoolchildren en masse participate in various competitions.
The first stages of almost all Olympiads start from October to January, they are held both in person and remotely, the final stage is only in person. Schoolchildren who perform well in the qualifying round are invited to participate in the final rounds.
You can get benefits when entering universities by becoming a winner (diploma holder of the 1st degree) or a prize-winner (diploma holder of the 2nd or 3rd degree) of the final of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren, as well as the Olympiad from the “List of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation”.

There are other competitions held in Russia, you can participate in them for general development and testing of knowledge, but universities do not provide benefits to their winners.
The All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad is the most important competition for Russian schoolchildren and applicants planning to take leading universities by storm.
Winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the Olympiad have the right to be enrolled in a specialized department of any university without entrance exams.
If the winner enters a non-core specialty, by decision of the university, he may receive 100 points for the Unified State Examination in a subject corresponding to the profile of the Olympiad.
The Ministry of Higher Education and Science every year approves the “List of Olympiads for schoolchildren,” which are also called university Olympiads, and their levels. The “List” for the 2018-2019 academic year included 76 competitions.
The winners and medalists of these Olympiads will receive benefits when entering universities this year.
All Olympiads in the “List” are divided into three levels, taking into account qualitative and quantitative criteria: the first is the highest level, the third is the lowest.
- Level 1 - schoolchildren from 25 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and more take part in the Olympiad; at least 30% of schoolchildren are from non-graduating classes; at the final stage, at least 70% of original creative tasks, at least 50% of tasks of a high level of complexity;
- Level 2 - schoolchildren from 12 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, two federal districts and more take part in the Olympiad; at least 25% of schoolchildren are from non-graduating classes; at the final stage, at least 50% of original creative tasks, at least 40% of tasks of a high level of complexity;
- Level 3 - schoolchildren from 6 constituent entities of the Russian Federation or more take part in the Olympiad; at least 20% of schoolchildren are from non-graduating classes; at the final stage, at least 30% of original creative tasks, at least 30% of tasks of a high level of complexity.
The level is assigned separately for each subject of the Olympiad. For example, in the National Research University Higher School of Economics Olympiad “Highest Test” there are subjects of all levels. Benefits for entering a university depend on the level of the Olympiad.
When choosing which Olympiads to participate in, a student can be guided by a simple rule: the higher the “class” of the Olympiad, the more universities, if he wins, will be willing to accept him for the first year under special conditions.
Winners and prize-winners of school Olympiads, as a rule, can count on the following benefits:
Winners and prize-winners of level I olympiads Winners and prize-winners of level II olympiads Winners and prize-winners of level III olympiads Enrollment in specialized areas without entrance exams*. It is necessary to confirm the result on the Unified State Exam (at least 75 points in a core subject). Enrollment in specialized areas without entrance exams OR 100 points for the Unified State Exam in a specialized subject*. It is necessary to confirm the result on the Unified State Exam (at least 75 points in a core subject). 100 points for the Unified State Exam in a core subject*. It is necessary to confirm the result on the Unified State Exam (at least 75 points in a core subject).
*Each university makes the decision to provide benefits independently
Which of these benefits the winners of the Olympiads will receive is decided by each university independently. Benefits should be tied to the levels of Olympiads and diploma degrees and cannot apply only to specific Olympiads. For example, Moscow State University. Lomonosov cannot give benefits only to the winners of its Lomonosov Olympiad; it must determine the same admission rules for the winners of all level 1 Olympiads.
In other words, the benefits that MSU will provide to the winners of its Olympiad will also apply to the winners of other Olympiads of the same level. But last year, an innovation appeared - now each university can determine its own internal list of Olympiads, the winners of which are entitled to benefits. And leading universities take advantage of this right, selecting only top Olympiads for their preferential list.
To take advantage of the benefit, winners and prize-winners of school Olympiads must confirm their Olympic results at the Unified State Examination, having scored at least 75 points in a core subject, but the university can set a higher minimum. For example, applicants entering the HSE educational program “Physics” had to confirm their Olympic result with 85 points on the Unified State Exam.

Which Olympiads provide benefits for admission to universities?
Which Olympiads provide benefits for admission to universities?
You can receive benefits when entering universities by becoming a winner (diploma holder of the 1st degree) or a prize-winner (diploma holder of the 2nd or 3rd degree) of the final of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren, as well as the Olympiad from the List of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
There are many other Olympiads and competitions for schoolchildren in Russia, but significant benefits for admission are provided only to the winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren and Olympiads included in the List.
There are two types of benefits for entering universities for Olympiad students: admission without entrance tests and receiving the maximum score for the Unified State Exam in a subject corresponding to the profile of the Olympiad, or for an additional entrance test established by the university (there is no need to take an additional exam).
About the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren
Winners or prize-winners of the final stage have the right to admission without entrance examinations to any university in a field corresponding to the profile of the Olympiad.
At the same time, the correlation between the direction of training and the profile of the Olympiad is determined by the university itself and without fail publishes this information on its official website.
Since 2016, this must be done before October 1 of the previous year (Order “On Amendments to the Procedure for Admission to Universities”).
- If the winner or prize-winner of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren chooses an educational program in a non-core field (specialty), then, by decision of the university, he is credited with the highest result (100 points) for the Unified State Exam in the corresponding subject.
- For the winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren, the right to benefits remains for 4 years.
- Olympiads under the auspices of the Russian Council of Olympiads for Schoolchildren
Every year, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation approves the List of Olympiads for schoolchildren for the next academic year, the winners of which receive benefits when entering universities. Last spring, universities submitted applications to conduct an examination and include the Olympiad that this university is holding in the List.
Experts from the Russian Council of School Olympiads analyzed the quality and level of complexity of the Olympiad tasks, information on the number of participants, the geography of the Olympiad, its results over the previous two years, and much more.
Based on these data, the Russian Council of School Olympiads decided to include Olympiads in the List and assign them levels on which benefits depend.
Since 2016, the right to the benefit can be used for 4 years, as in the case of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren. But for Olympiads from the List, each university can decide for itself in which class of the general education program a diploma should be obtained in order to provide benefits.
To use the discount upon admission, winners and prize-winners of Olympiads must score a certain number of points on the Unified State Examination in a subject that corresponds to the profile of the Olympiad. As a general rule, at least 75 points, but a university can set a higher “bar.”
A university can choose one or more subjects from among the core subjects for the Olympiad, in which (or for which) the winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad, entering without entrance examinations, must score a certain number of Unified State Examination points. For example, if the Olympiad in Economics provides a benefit, the university can define mathematics or social studies or both of these subjects as such a subject - both subjects correspond to the profile of the Olympiad.
In order to take advantage of the “maximum score for the entrance test” benefit, you need to “confirm” the Olympiad with a Unified State Exam score in the subject of this entrance test.
According to the new rules, each university has the right to approve its own shortened list of olympiads that provide benefits, and leave without benefits the winners and prize-winners of other olympiads included in the List of the Ministry of Education and Science. It is still difficult to say whether universities will actively use this opportunity.
More information about the university's requirements can be found in the admission rules published on its official website. Be sure to read them, despite the complex bureaucratic language that evokes boredom and the desire to stop reading immediately.
Now universities must publish all information about benefits even earlier - not before June 1, as before, but before October 1 of the year preceding admission (Order “On Amendments to the Procedure for Admission to Universities”).
About diplomas for winners and prize-winners of Olympiads from the List
Winners and prize-winners of Olympiads from the List can receive both the original diploma (they are issued by the organizer of the Olympiad at their location) and its electronic copy.
Regardless of their place of residence, the winner (prize-winner) of an Olympiad from the List can, using the services of the portal of the Russian Council of School Olympiads, print out an electronic copy of the diploma, which any admissions committee will readily accept, since the copy is equivalent to the original.
If an error is discovered in the data printed on the diploma, you must promptly inform the organizers of the Olympiad and wait until it is corrected.
Details about benefits for winners and prize-winners of Olympiads
Is it possible, as a graduate of one Olympiad from the List, to receive a discount when entering not one university, but several? This question is asked more often than others and it’s clear why.
According to the general admission rules, an applicant can apply to five universities and in each of them no more than 3 areas of study. Accordingly, the benefit “to count the maximum Unified State Exam score in a subject corresponding to the profile of the Olympiad” can be used no more than 15 times.
You can take advantage of the benefit of admission without entrance examinations only at one university and in one field of study. To do this, along with the diploma of the winner (prize-winner) of the Olympiad, you will have to submit the original certificate at once.
An exception is the case when the applicant has both a diploma from the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren and an Olympiad diploma from the List, which gives the right to admission without exams.
Then you can get the benefit in two universities or in two competitions of the same university: in one you submit the original certificate, and in the other - a copy indicating where the original is.
It happens that an applicant, having the right to be accepted into a training program without entrance examinations, asks for the maximum Unified State Examination score in a core subject to be counted for him and to be allowed to participate in the general competition, since he submitted the original diploma to another university. This non-standard situation is resolved by the admissions committees of different universities in different ways - some universities allow you to replace a higher-level benefit with a lower-level benefit, while others do not.
Among the Olympiad participants there are “Stakhanovites” who take part in many Olympiads and achieve success in many of them. Such an applicant can present to the admissions committee diplomas of the winner (prize-winner) of various Olympiads and receive maximum scores in several or even all entrance examinations.
If you still have questions
Unfortunately, the new admission procedure contains points that universities can interpret differently, so some specific situations are not considered here. If you do not find the answer to your question in this material, contact the admissions office of the chosen university, they will be able to answer it as accurately as possible.

Which listed Olympiads will provide benefits for admission to universities in 2020
The Olympics are a case where both participation and victory are important. Starting from the regional stage, the level of difficulty of tasks becomes quite high, since according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Science, the quota of winners and prize-winners at it is no more than 25% of the total number of participants.
This means that the best of the best will get the right to participate in the finals. To become one of them, preparation with a teacher will be needed in any case - be it a tutor or courses. Lessons with a tutor are not a cheap pleasure. They have an undoubted advantage in that they allow maximum attention to the student.
However, it does not always justify the financial means. The cost of an academic hour for many good teachers often reaches 3000-5000 rubles; studying with bad ones simply does not make sense. And if there is more than one subject, and even preparation for the Unified State Exam is added to it, then you can completely go broke.
In addition, not all Olympiad coaches and experienced university teachers preparing for Olympiads agree to individual lessons due to their workload. Therefore, group classes provide an opportunity not only to study with teachers who really know their business, but also to save up to 50%.

In the university admission rules, in the “accounting for additional achievements” section, there is usually a list of olympiads that will give you additional qualifications. points.
