• When you buy children's train tickets for a small child, you need to decide what is more important - comfort or money. There are two options to choose from:
• — travel with a child in one seat, but at the cost of only one “adult” ticket;
• — or pay an additional 35-50% of the cost of an “adult” ticket so that the child has a separate seat.
• In addition, even if the cost of a train ticket for a child is zero, you will still have to get his form at the station or go through electronic registration.

To buy a children's train ticket, you will need a child's birth certificate . From May 14, 2019, parents of children under 1 month of age who have not yet received a birth certificate can purchase a ticket by presenting a medical certificate of the child’s birth. Schoolchildren from 10 years old from January 1 to May 31 and from September 1 to December 31 can purchase a ticket with a discount of up to 50%. The discount is valid only for tickets within Russia in reserved seat, general and seated carriages of non-branded trains.

Traveling in the same categories of carriages on branded trains will cost a student more. In addition to 50% of the fare on a non-branded train, you will need to pay the difference between the fare on a branded and non-branded train.

The discount does not apply to high-speed trains (No. 701–788), for example, “Sapsan”, “Lastochka”, “Strizh”. The discount cannot be combined with other promotions and is valid only for citizens of the Russian Federation.

A certificate from the school is not required when purchasing a ticket. But a certificate will be required when boarding the train.

Tickets for schoolchildren can be purchased on the website tutu.ru. The discount is applied automatically.  

Discounts for schoolchildren to Kaliningrad and Abkhazia

On these two routes, for schoolchildren over 10 years old there are also discounts of up to 50%, but they only work in Russia. And on the territory of Latvia (for a ticket to Kaliningrad) and Abkhazia, the ticket will cost its full price. This means that when purchasing a ticket you will need to pay not 50% of its price, but, for example, 70%.

Promotion "Happy Holidays" 

There was a Russian Railways “Happy Holidays” promotion on Tutu.ru: tickets for children aged 10 to 17 years inclusive were sold at a 50% discount.

The discount applied to travel from June 1 to August 31, 2019 in domestic traffic in reserved seats, general carriages, seated carriages of fast and long-distance passenger trains (including branded ones), as well as in carriages of 2 and 3 classes of multi-unit rolling stock (high-speed trains 800- th numbering). 

The discount was applied automatically on the website if the passenger’s age met the special fare. The “Happy Holidays” discount cannot be combined with other discounts and promotions.

Children's tickets at Sapsan

Sapsan has two tariffs suitable for children: “Children” (up to 10 years old) and “Junior” (from 10 to 21 years old).

"Children's" (up to 10 years old). The cost of a child's ticket to Sapsan starts from 366 rubles per ticket. The tariff applies to all classes of service. When purchasing a ticket, select “child ticket with seat.”

"Junior" (from 10 to 21 years old). The tariff gives a 30% discount when purchasing an adult ticket. When boarding the train, you must present proof of age. The tariff does not apply to the purchase of tickets for first class carriages and compartments with meeting rooms.

On the Tutu.ru website, the discount is applied automatically if the passenger’s age qualifies for the special fare. The price including the discount is displayed at the “Complete order” stage.

Children's tickets at Lastochki

1. Passengers under 21 years of age receive discounted tickets for Lastochka.

   The following discounted rates apply on the site:

3. Junior (from 10 years to 21 years, including 21st birthday) - 30% discount.

The child's age is calculated at the time of train departure. The discount is applied automatically when the passenger's age is specified and cannot be combined with other discounts and promotions. The discount is available only to citizens of the Russian Federation.

Transporting children in soft carriages

In double compartments of the Soft (luxury) category, which are purchased only as a whole (for JSC FPC these are service classes 1A, 1I, 1M), regardless of the number of adults traveling, you can carry two children:

• one child under 5 years old and one child under 10 years old
• or two children under 5 years old.

If one adult and a child are traveling in such a compartment, you need to issue 2 tickets at the full fare indicating the details of the passengers, the adult and the child. A ticket is purchased for a child using a birth certificate.

If two adults and children are traveling in a compartment (one or two children under 10 years old), then to obtain a free ticket for a child under 10 years old, you need to contact the railway ticket office at the station.

Transporting children in a soft carriage of the Strizh train Moscow - Berlin:

• if there is only one adult passenger in a compartment, he can carry one child under 12 years old (the fare is called “Adult-Single”);
• if two adult passengers are traveling, they can carry two children under 4 years old (Adult “Family” fare).

Child aged 5 to 10 years - with a discount of up to 65%. The discount depends on the length of the route and the country.

In non-CIS countries, children under 12 years old receive a 50% discount. These are the directions: from Moscow to Nice, Paris, Prague and Vienna; from St. Petersburg to Prague and Vienna.

To the following countries, a child under 4 years old can be transported free of charge if he does not occupy a separate seat: Poland, China, North Korea, Mongolia. For Finland, the child’s age is higher - up to 6 years. For children from 4 to 12 years old, the discount on tickets to these countries will be approximately 25%.

Traveling with children in women's and men's compartments

Children under 10 years of age can travel in “same-sex” compartments with a parent, regardless of gender.

Thus, a mother and her 9-year-old son can easily buy a ticket for a women’s compartment, and a father and his 3-year-old daughter can travel in a men’s compartment. This is only relevant for trains traveling within Russia.

But if the child is over 10 years old, you need to issue a ticket for a mixed compartment. If you are traveling abroad, it is also recommended to buy tickets in a mixed compartment.
