How many minutes is a lesson at school: what time do lessons start and end?

According to the recommendations of International Health Organizations, classes in middle and high schools should begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

This time was established in the middle of the last century, and since then classes in most schools begin this way.

To date, the start of the educational process at one's own discretion can only be established in private and specialized schools.

According to SanPiN for lesson schedule regulations

Such an early start to school is regulated by sanitary standards (clause 10.4 of SanPiN 2-4-2-2821-10). First of all, this is due to the start of work of parents who need to wake up in the morning, wake up the child, get him ready, feed him breakfast, bring him to school, and then have time to go to his work.

According to clause 10.6. The educational weekly load is evenly distributed during the school week, while the volume of the maximum permissible weekly classroom load during the day is:

  • for 1st grade students – should not exceed 4 lessons;
  • for students in grades 2 – 4 – no more than 5 lessons;
  • for students in grades 5–6 – no more than 6 lessons;
  • for students in grades 7–11 – no more than 7 lessons.

The timing of the initial process at school is individually decided by local government in the interests of everyone

Lesson duration:

Grades 2-11 – lessons last 45 minutes

First-graders require special attention in scheduling lessons, since school is a new experience for them.

Some schools follow a staggered class schedule, which is a schedule that makes it easier for children to adapt to a new environment.

The methodology is based on the principle of a gradual and consistent increase in load (duration and number of lessons). To organize such a system, the following must be included in the daily schedule:

  • 1st half of the year 3-4 lessons, lasting 35 minutes;
  • 2nd half of the year 3-4 lessons, lasting 40 minutes.

Starting and finishing times of school lessons for grades 2-11

Classes start no earlier than 8 am. The school day ends after the 6th lesson (for students in grades 2-4, the lesson lasts 45 minutes, for first graders - 35-40 minutes). Many people are interested in what time does lesson 6 end? This is determined by the change:

  • First shift – until 13:30;
  • Second shift – until 19:30-20:00.

It is worth noting that grades 5, 9 and 11 cannot study during the second shift. Also, you cannot organize the process in more than 2 shifts. The weekly load is distributed evenly. The daily and general mental performance of children and the complexity of subjects are taken into account. In the middle of the week, it is recommended to increase the level of mental activity; minors are loaded with lessons with the highest scores (chemistry, algebra, physics, etc.). It is at this time that the number of lessons increases, as opposed to the beginning and end of the week.

Do I need to postpone the start of classes?

According to many studies, starting early is not beneficial. Scientists believe that shifting the start of school by at least 1 hour would enable students to get better sleep and get better grades.

Thus, American biologists from the University of Washington (Seattle) conducted a study confirming that delaying the start of classes and increasing sleep duration improved attendance among schoolchildren.

It also contributed to an increase in the average score in school subjects by as much as 4.5%.

Scientists from the University of Kentucky note that children who study at school early in the morning receive lower grades than those students for whom the first bell rings later. Scientists say that lack of sleep has a negative impact on cognitive processes.

Lack of sleep makes it difficult for children to concentrate, and therefore they are not very attentive in class. The ability to learn and function properly is determined by sleep-wake cycles (circadian rhythms). If they are followed, no problems with learning or health will bother the child.

This opinion is shared by Alexey Melekhin, who is a psychologist and a member of the Russian Society of Somnologists.

According to him, the start time of lessons should not be shifted, as this does not have any effect on the mental and physiological state of children. On the contrary, early start of studies improves cognitive functioning and voluntary regulation.

It is necessary to monitor circadian rhythms. The child should get up at the same time on weekends. You shouldn't allow jetlag. Children, and adults too, should get up at the same time every day.

Shifts and postponements of classes may result in a certain breakdown, and this should never be allowed to happen.

Lessons in schools start at 8:30. All classes follow a five-day school week. Approval of the calendar schedule for the academic year is the responsibility of the school director. Students must be at school no later than 8:20 am.

They must have a clean and tidy appearance. Outerwear and spare shoes are left in the wardrobe. According to his schedule, the student goes to the classroom, takes a workplace and prepares everything necessary for the upcoming lesson.

You can't be late for classes.

Why do you need to follow SanPin in your school schedule?

If there are errors in the school schedule, the institution risks receiving significant fines. It is worth noting that not only the school, but also its director will be fined. Thus, the institution will pay 70 thousand rubles, and the manager – 7 thousand rubles. (Article 6.7 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).

In addition, the founder may decide to bring the management to disciplinary liability by making a remark or reprimand (Article 192 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation). This is why you should be especially careful when planning your schedule.

By adding disciplines to it, it is still necessary to adhere to the standards and fulfill the requirements that are outlined in SanPiN 2.4.2.2821-10.

How is the class divided into groups during classes?

Parallel classes can be divided into groups. This event is necessary for those schools that teach several languages, including native and foreign ones.

In addition, division makes it possible to conduct labor and physical education classes, and if physics is the first lesson. It should be noted that the establishment is not obliged to divide into groups.

But it is not recommended to neglect such recommendations, since this helps to increase the effectiveness of training.

The issue of alternating classes with additional lessons is important. The school has the right to combine them if it has switched to the Federal State Educational Standard. According to general requirements, breaks are not maintained, since additional classes in their form are not similar to classroom activities.

If educational activities according to FC GOS continue in an educational institution, then extracurricular activities cannot be mixed with the educational process. Schedules of electives and lessons should be compiled separately.

In this case, after the last lesson before the start of the additional lesson there must be a break lasting at least 45 minutes.

School bell schedule: school bells, St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg

Before sending your child to school, you need to find out the school schedule: what time do middle and high schools start and end, when and what hours are medical offices open?

Operating modes

High school classes start at 8:00, 8:15 or 9:00. Lessons end at the first shift at 14-15 hours. Before the first lesson of the first shift, a five-minute exercise is carried out. The second shift starts at 11 or 13 o'clock and ends at 17-19 o'clock in the evening. In grades 5-7, elective after-school classes are available in the first shift, and students in the second shift are provided with a school bus.

 Loading …

The lesson lasts 45 minutes, then there is a break of 10 or 15 minutes, after 3 or 4 lessons there is a long break for lunch of 25-30 minutes.

  • Schools open from 8:00: 520, 564, 353, 509, 483, 579, 489, 96, etc.
  • Schools open from 8:15: GBOU No. 45, 16, 77, 152, gymnasium No. 3, etc.
  • The following educational institutions are open from 9:00: schools No. 320, 325, 491, 329, 31, 386, 44, 285, etc.

Many schools in St. Petersburg are open from 9:00 so that schoolchildren have time to get there without traffic jams or to make it convenient for their parents to take them to school.

If a student is more than 15 minutes late after the bell rings, he should not be allowed into the office and must spend the rest of the lesson in the lobby. Schoolchildren are not allowed in without a change of shoes. It is necessary to write an explanatory note addressed to the head teacher. If there are several delays, parents are notified of the situation.

First and second shift

The schedule depends on the grade and direction of the school. By law, grades 1, 5, 9 and 11 must study only in 1 shift; for other grades, the bell schedule is drawn up by the school.

Advanced schools, lyceums and gymnasiums operate only the first shift. This is due to special knowledge and increased load on the subject.

In the second half of the day, knowledge is absorbed worse (if mental work occurs in the morning), so these classes and specialized areas are not put in the second shift.

The second shift is not convenient for all students. She divides the day into two parts, which can affect academic performance, but the regimen is suitable for children who have difficulty getting up when the alarm clock rings.

For night owls, it is more convenient to wake up at 10 am and go to study at lunch, and do the most difficult tasks in the evening. Complex tasks are better understood in the evening, and in the morning, standard tasks and simple tasks are completed effectively.

During the second shift, it can be difficult for a child to return home in the dark, and schools transport students or ask parents.

In secondary schools in St. Petersburg, the first shift is a priority due to additional classes and tutors. Most often they choose the first one.

Medical office work

The medical office is open from 2 lessons. If the educational institution has less than 600 people, the nurse must appear 3 times a week. If there are more students, then daily for 4-5 hours.

The medical office worker is assigned to the children's clinic and works full time. When the medical office is closed, the class teacher is responsible for the child’s well-being.

If a student feels unwell, the class teacher (or if he is not there, the head teacher) sends him home at his own risk.

School medical offices have a modest supply of drugs, so the student must have: tablets for allergies, for headaches in case of individual intolerance to ingredients, specific drugs.

Full-time work at the medical office only on vaccination and medical examination days. Once a year, the manta ray is vaccinated and checked for lice. Flu injections are given 1-2 times a year.

In the 8th grade they are vaccinated against diphtheria, whooping cough and papilloma virus. Before vaccination, parental consent forms are distributed.

If consent is given, the vaccination is not given to children with a fever and in the first week after the flu, but they are given a certificate for vaccination at a designated clinic.

Office hours

Usually the director or his deputy receives visitors for 2-3 hours - after lunch. During admissions office hours are longer. At other times, outsiders are not allowed to be within the walls of the educational institution, only in emergency situations.

The rules for receiving visitors at schools in St. Petersburg depend on the school. Parents must come to school with documents. It is necessary to provide the name of the employee with whom the meeting is scheduled and the time of the appointment.

The watchman will lead you to the office or show the way and record the visit. Some schools provide a guest card. The director needs to call and arrange a meeting.

If the visit is scheduled by the director or head teacher, there is no need to call.

Gymnasiums and lyceums have open days and entrance exams, which are held in May-July. For exams, you need documents, a pen, a notebook, a calculator and reference materials, a diary from the previous year of study, and a portfolio.

How long should a school lesson really be: 40 or 45 minutes?

Recently, some schools have returned to the traditional lesson length of 45 minutes, although before that they had been 40 minutes for almost a decade and a half. What is the reason for this, whose competence is to establish the duration of the academic hour and who is at a disadvantage from these additional five minutes to the lesson, SN found out.

We went to get the main comment, dispelling all guesses and conjectures, as it really should be, from the district education department.

Tatiana VELYADO, senior methodologist of the district education department:

“The duration of the lesson is regulated by the requirements of the Sanitary Rules and Standards,” explains Tatyana Viktorovna.

— According to this document, the duration of a lesson (academic hour) in all classes should not exceed 45 minutes (with the exception of first grade and compensatory class, the duration of a lesson in which should not exceed 40 minutes).

The usual operating hours of schools have changed due to additional requirements in the instructional and methodological letter of the Chelyabinsk region regarding classes taught according to federal educational state standards.

So, in the first grade in the first half of the year, the duration of the lesson should not exceed 35 minutes, in the second - 45 minutes; in the second grade, the duration of the lesson is 45 minutes, continues Tatyana Viktorovna.

— Schools should strictly comply with this mandatory requirement, but for other classes the SanPiN requirement is the same: lessons should not exceed 45 minutes (that is, it may well be 40 minutes).

Thus, ten out of 17 schools in the district chose a lesson duration of 45 minutes.

In addition, SanPiN establishes hygienic requirements for the maximum values of the weekly educational load. This determines the six-day period for high school students, whose number of hours in subjects does not fit into five school days, even if there are seventh lessons.

Lyubov ERYOMINA, director of Bredinsky school No. 1:

— If second graders have to study for exactly 45 minutes, how can the school give them separate bells? - says Lyubov Viktorovna.

— It is clear that first-graders in the first half of the year can be allowed to rest after 35 minutes of the lesson and five minutes before the general bell.

But what about second-graders, whose first break would start five minutes later than the school break, the second - ten minutes later, and so on?

Based on this, our school decided to switch lessons to 45 minutes in all classes, excluding first-graders, although I won’t say that this was easy,” continues Lyubov Viktorovna.

- Now lessons for children in the middle and senior levels begin to end at 15:00, and many of our students attend the children's art school, individual lessons with subject teachers, as well as clubs and sections. Plus, we still need to do homework, and the children are already very tired.

In general, we will once again consult with colleagues from other schools and, if possible, we will try to return lessons to the way they were.

The lengthening of the school day by an average of half an hour has caused great confusion in the work of the additional education institution.

Natalya PLOTNIKOVA, director of the Bredin Children's Art School:

“For us, 45-minute lessons in a comprehensive school became a real problem,” says Natalya Alexandrovna. — The guys finish studying at three o’clock in the afternoon, plus while they go to lunch, they can come to our classes no earlier than half past three.

The teachers at the art school are not able to accept everyone from three hours to their individual lessons. We work on Saturdays anyway. It turns out that the working day here should end at approximately eight o'clock in the evening.

What should children do about this? We have a proposal for secondary schools: start the school day earlier, for example, at 8:00.

But where the 45 minutes of the lesson added positivity was in the study of each individual subject. But also with a caveat...

Natalya PONOMAREVA, teacher of Russian language and literature at Bredinsky school No. 1:

“Of course, I’m sorry that the guys are tired, but for my part I can say that it was these five minutes that I always missed,” says Natalya Mikhailovna. — More than ever, I have time to complete all the planned material; there is still time to effectively consolidate what I have learned in the lesson. Knowledge will become fuller and stronger. However, the seventh lesson on the schedule is almost wasted due to fatigue.

Survey. What time do classes start at school? | Children | Kindergartens, schools, development centers

  • Virgos, I really need it. Write what time do classes at your child’s school start, or did they start for you when you were studying? And the city. I studied 30 years ago - always at 8:30, now with my child at 8:30. Moscow.
  • 25 years ago in 2 schools in Moscow - at 8.30 A in a school at MIF, where there were only grades 9-11, it seems they started at 9 (at that time, 25 years ago). And it seems to me that 25-20 years ago, in general — in the 90s, in some schools classes began at 9 o’clock. I haven’t seen this before. Now the child is at 8.30.
  • 20 years ago school started at 9:00, but I switched to it from a school that started at 8:30. Now the child has 1 lesson at 8-30
  • 9:00 I love our school, at 8:45 we get into the car just to leave
  • Moscow, Nakhimovsky prospect
  • Moscow Southern Administrative District at 8.15, but the teacher demands to be in class at 8.00 - they start exercising at that time
  • For one child at 8-30, for another at 9. For me it started, it seems, at 8-30. Moscow.
  • We traditionally have it at 8.30, with friends in Butovo at 8.00 (poor children).
  • At 8.30, but you have to be at school at 8.10, they have breakfast before the first lesson.
  • Moscow. Starts at 8-00, from 5th grade at 9-00. To be honest, it was better at 8, but now in the 5th grade they study until 15, while club, lessons and going out are already late in the evening. I studied at one time from 8-30 and 9-00 and on the second shift from 12-13
  • Nizhny Novgorod. The first shift starts school at 8:00. The second is different in all schools. For us - at 12:40. When I studied, in the morning they also started at 8 o’clock.
  • in my childhood 8:25 state gymnasium, today 9:00 private school
  • Moscow. Children have 8:30, when I was studying it was 8:15 and 8:30.
  • 8.30 for the child, and for me too, always started at 8.30, although I studied at different schools. Kyiv.
  • Well, how can we do without the gray mention of the 57th? It seems they didn't ask about the school number
  • I also really like that we have lessons from 9. These half an hour were sorely missed in the mornings. And at my neighbor’s school, classes start at 10. This is probably not convenient for all parents, but in my opinion it’s even better for children!
  • 8:30. Moscow. And 25-30 years ago, when I studied, it was the same way back.
  • 8:30 my son and my husband and I had the same thing. Moscow
  • At 8.00 1st shift for the youngest, at 13.00 2nd shift for the eldest. When I was studying, it was different. Podolsk, Moscow Region.
  • At 8.30. Just like me 28 years ago
  • at 8.30, but the teacher asks to be brought to 8.20, because they leave for breakfast after the first lesson 5 minutes earlier so that the high school students don’t knock them out 8)
  • At 8.40. When I was studying, it started at 8.30.
  • Private? Usually in private from 9.
  • Private
  • 8-00 Moscow region, it started the same way for me.
  • 8:30 start, from 9:00 seniors, so that they don’t cross each other in the corridors in the morning.
  • Why does the author need such a survey?
  • At the beginning at 8-15, at the lyceum at 8-30. Almost Moscow.
  • Our parents also refused 9 in high school. And these 8-15 in the beginning are so hard for me...
  • At 9.00 it starts at schools, to which many children travel from afar, prestigious lyceums and gymnasiums. And yard schools, where children from the area - at 8.30. That's the whole survey.
  • Moscow, my son started at 8-15, mine started at 8-30
  • 9-00. Moscow. School with in-depth language study.
  • At 8:15 they force you to show up, even though the official start time. 8:30. They're charging.
  • got into an argument with a friend. She claims that everyone studies from 9-00. But she is in St. Petersburg. And their school is an ordinary courtyard one, without recesses. I always thought that in Moscow the majority starts at 8:30. And in many regions where I have friends, it also starts at 8:30. I’m trying to understand why it starts at 9:00 or 9:15, or even 10:00. I don’t see any patterns - every hut has its own rattles...
  • And we canceled the advanced exercises, now my son sleeps longer. Lessons were at 9.00, exercises were at 8.45, we arrived at 8.35. ((((
  • now at 8.30, Moscow, me at 8.00, not Moscow
  • At 9.00 Moscow school 192 And yes, at 9.00-57)))
  • 20 years ago at 8:30. It's the same now.
  • The lyceum where I work is from 9.00. The explanation is simple - children travel from afar.
  • For the child it’s 8.30 Moscow, for me at 8 it’s not Moscow
  • OMG...go to St. Petersburg in January and see what time it gets light on the white nights in the summer - it’s beautiful, but in the winter it’s dark at 11 am. everything is very simple
  • In Moscow in winter it is also dark at 8 am, and even at 9. However... I lived in the Arctic Circle for more than 20 years, so I am not surprised by either white nights in summer or darkness in the mornings in winter. This is never an argument, it seems to me.
  • And what? In Moscow, you might think it’s light at 9:00, in winter it gets light closer to 10:00 with these damn time changes. My kids start studying at 8:00, in fact, half of the lessons at the rocking chair are in the dark
  • 8.30. Near Moscow region. For me, too, at 8.30 in the 80s.
  • you asked why. I answered. It may or may not be considered an argument, but that’s how it is.
  • and is your indignation addressed to me? or minobraz? or the president?
  • similarly. Lyubertsy. MO (for the younger one) 8-30 Nekrasovka (for the older one)
  • There are regulations for all these times. Look/In St. Petersburg it starts from 9. in Moscow - depending on the proportion of students living in other districts and the status of the school, etc. — The Internet can help you)
  • Very early at 8.00 (the school closes for entry at 7.50). Khimki. I studied in Moscow. 1st lesson was at 9.00, and at 8.10 there was the so-called 0th lesson. He was there once a week and no one liked him. They never did tests or difficult topics on it, because everyone had not yet woken up. But this is my son’s guard duty! To go to school (it’s basically in the yard) you need to get up at 6.50. These are nightmares.
  • What outrage? It's just that your argument is somehow dubious. We did this because of the 2nd shift, so that everyone could be accommodated in a non-rubber school
  • + I really don’t understand the point of this exercise, especially in winter, when these 15 minutes are worth their weight in gold)) by the time you get to school, here’s the exercise.
  • Moscow. The beginning is 9:30, the rest of the school is 8:30. I love our school!!! Son too
  • At 8.30, Moscow, you must be at school no later than 8.20. And I studied from 8.30, all 10 years. We studied in the first grade in a private school - there it was from 9.00, I know that some lyceums start at 9.00, Vorobyovy Gory for example.
  • Is your son still studying at the beginning?
  • yeah, but I hope that in the 5th grade it will be easier for him to open his eyes in the morning. But this is not the only thing he likes about school
  • 8.30 and Moscow and Moscow Region. In my childhood it was strictly at 8.00, the Patamushtas lived in a military town, and the military began their working day at 8. The city adapted to this regime. It was a damn shame that our peers from Moscow and the surrounding area could sleep half an hour longer than us
  • Moscow. Let's just go to 1st grade. We chose between several schools: 8.30 and 9.00. Later arrival to school outweighed
  • We stupidly staggered the start of classes at different schools in order to reduce traffic jams near them. Therefore, the start time is different for everyone, from 8-15 to 8-45.
  • I would prefer to start at 8 or 10. It’s much easier to go.
  • I graduated from school 25 years ago, lessons started at 8.00, Magadan. Now the child is studying in Moscow, classes start at 8.30.
  • A school where classes start at 9 is apparently not easy? Six days from second grade?
  • Regular education center. Six days from 5th grade.
  • Moscow. Lessons start at 9:30, but there is still exercise and children from grades 1 to 8 must arrive at school earlier.
  • 8-15 min. Warm-up in class.. Lesson at 8:30.
  • +1 I studied in Komsomolsk-on-Amur from 8.00. In high school we moved to Moscow. School started at 8.30... it was even unusual.
